Mare of Easttown: What is the story so far?
This HBO crime drama is unfolding an intriguing story as it moves forward. Easttown is a small town in Pennsylvania where everyone knows everyone. The key character, Detective Mare Sheehan, is played by Kate Winslet. The series focuses on two elements, the first one is Mare's personal life, which reflects the conflicts of her divorced life, and the second one is her professional life, yes, the case of a murder mystery. Here, we're going to discuss the first three episodes.
(Note: Spoilers ahead.)
Miss Lady Hawk Herself
The pilot episode starts slow where we get introduced to Mare Sheehan and the world that revolves around her.
Mare's personal life is messed up, she lives with her daughter Siobhan (Angourie Rice), grandson Drew, and mother Helen (Jean Smart). Mare's ex-husband, Frank (David Denman), lives next door, he is getting engaged, and moving forward in his life while Mare is still stuck. Mare's relationship with her daughter doesn't seem great either.
The first victim (Katie Bailey) is still missing after a year. Katie had some bad connections, so no one was surprised after her disappearance. But questions begin to arise after the death of a teenage mother, Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny). Erin's ex-boyfriend, Dylan (Jack Mulhern), and his girlfriend, Brianna (Mackenzie Lansing), are the prime suspects. This episode also shows an unknown weird guy in the hoodie.
The first episode is a little bit slow and uneventful until the end. Yet, we get to introduce many characters. Kate Winslet is phenomenal as always. Cailee Spaeny is noticeable. Angourie Rice's new avatar is charming.
Is there any connection between Katie's disappearance and Erin's murder?
Fathers
This episode features Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Detective Colin Zabel, he will further assist Erin's case.
Mare & Zabel interrogated everyone who was present at Creedham Creek. Siobhan didn't tell Mare about the Creek incident, it reflects the relationship gap between mother and daughter.
It gives more depth to Mare's character. We come to know about Mare's late son (Kevin), who committed suicide a year ago. Kevin's wife (Drew's mother), Carrie Layden (Sosie Bacon), came out of rehab recently. Now she wants full custody of Drew, it appears that she blames Mare for Kevin's death.
From the title (Fathers), you must have thought that it would be about Erin's father going after Dylan. Well, that's exactly what happens. But the metaphorical title also indicates something else.
Who is the real father of Erin's son?
Erin's friend, Jess Riley (Ruby Cruz), comes forward with a new possibility that Frank Sheehan may be the father of Erin's son.
Throughout the series, Mare seemed to be alone in her personal life, but the possibility of Frank being involved in the case gave me a strangely satisfying feeling. This episode was stronger than the previous one.
Enter Number Two
This episode confirms that Mare may be superior as a detective, but as a mother, she still needs to learn many things.
Erin's call history leads to Deacon Mark Burton (James McArdle), a priest of Saint Michael. Deacon was involved in some illegal business in the past, that's why he has been transferred to Easttown. It seems as if he is the one behind Erin's murder.
Frank claimed to be clean and nodded to give a paternity test. Dylan somehow survived after being shot by Kenny McMenamin (Patrick Murney). Kathy Lahey's son is another suspicious character, maybe he's the hoodie guy. In the end, Mare is removed from the investigation because of her madness to keep the custody of her grandson. She goes to the therapist in the next episode.
This episode is full of emotions. The arguments between Mare-Helen and Mare-Frank were realistic and relatable. Kate Winslet's performance deserves an Emmy Award.
Who has kidnapped Katie Bailey?
Is Deacon Mark Burton the bad guy?
What secret is Jess Riley still hiding?
This doesn't feel like a valid question. But, did Erin try to blackmail Deacon for the surgery money?
