The Courier: A Spy Thriller Based on True Events Starring Benedict Cumberbatch

The Courier isn't just about the Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union, nor about how the CIA & MI6 agents worked together to prevent a nuclear war, it is about two individuals who risked their lives to save mankind. These two individuals are Greville Wynne & Oleg Penkovsky.

This true story takes place in 1960 when CIA agent Emily Donovan (Rachel Brosnahan), urges MI6 agent Dickie Franks, to provide a man off the radar who can bring the courier from Moscow to London without leaving any trace. Yes, the courier is the secret military data of the Soviet Union. So they recruited Greville Wynne (Benedict Cumberbatch), he is a salesman and occasionally travels to Moscow for business. Oleg Penkovsky (Merab Ninidze) is a colonel of the Soviet intelligence agency (KGB) and a spy of America. He supplies all the secret data to Greville, then Greville smuggles them to London, that's how the partnership between Penkovsky and Greville begins. This duo provided more than 5000 secret documents of the Soviet Union and prevented the Third World War.

Jessie Buckley (I'm Thinking of Ending Things, Netflix) is playing the role of Greville's wife. The story explores the ups and downs between their relationship, how Greville struggles to keep his personal life and professional life separate. I don't want to spoil it, but I would say that Greville risks his life to defect Penkovsky in the end, though he has to face the consequences of his decision.

This movie also sheds light on the dark side of being a spy, or the worst thing about being a spy, is that there will be no one to rescue you when you get caught. And your life becomes an endless torture.

I liked the emotional yet gentle performance of Benedict Cumberbatch, his acting turns the average role into an excellent one. It is a realistic portrayal of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I suggest this movie, even if you're not into war movies.
