Run: Does Hulu's Thriller Present Sarah Paulson as a Psycho Mother?
Hulu presents a dark thriller story of a physically challenged girl and her caring mother. Sarah Paulson is portrayed as a mother and Kiera Allen as a daughter. I have known Sarah Paulson since her versatile cameos in American Horror Story. This is the debut film by Kiera Allen.
Run (2020)
Genres: Mystery, Thriller
Cast: Sarah Paulson, Kiera Allen
It begins in a hospital where Diane (Sarah Paulson) has given birth to a girl (Chloe), but her health is very critical. She has five different types of diseases, including asthma, diabetes, and paralysis of the legs. Then the movie takes us 17 years later to the homeschooler parents' gathering where Diane tells that she has been taking care of her daughter for 17 years and that she has never left her on her own. Yet, Chloe is the most capable person she knows. If her daughter goes to college, she has no worries.
Kiera Allen appears as 17-year-old Chloe, who is wheelchair-bound because her lower body is paralyzed. Despite her physically challenging condition, she knows how to take care of herself. Chloe is smart and is dreaming of going to college, but her mother has different plans. Diane doesn't want her daughter to go to college. Actually, she doesn't want her to leave the house. She never bought a mobile nor a computer for Chloe, though Chloe can access her mother's computer. It appears that Chloe is completely disconnected from the outside world. (She doesn't even have any friends!)
Chloe begins to suspect her mother when she finds a fake labelled medicine bottle. She tries to Google it (Trigoxin), but her mother has already cut off the internet, she doesn't stop here, and she eventually discovers the truth. Diane locks her in the room. Here, the movie's title makes sense and begins the rollercoaster ride of this thriller. The story holds more secrets than you think. There is a very thin line between being overprotective and being abusive.
You may think this movie is about the misunderstanding and trust issue in family members, but the movie goes far beyond that. For the first 10 minutes, the director (Aneesh Chaganty) built a narrative of an ideal mother-daughter bond, but the bond gets thinner as the movie progresses.
This is not one of those movies where, as soon as you know the secret, you suddenly lose interest in it. The story of the movie is really engaging and full of tension, it will keep you hooked till the end. Newcomer, Kiera Allen, has done an exceptional job. The story may seem unrealistic and have a few plot holes, but Run is entertaining for a one-time.
