The True Adventures of Wolfboy: A Distinct Coming-of-age Movie

This movie sheds light on a rare condition called hypertrichosis, which causes excessive growth of hair on the face and body. Jaeden Martell is starring as the Wolfboy. You may have seen him in 'It (2017)' horror movie as Bill, but you may not recognize him in the Wolfboy's get-up. Chris Messina is shown as his father. I have known him since 'The Giant Mechanicalman (2012)'.

The True Adventures of Wolfboy Movie Aesthetic

Paul (Jaeden Martell) is a 13-year-old boy and has hypertrichosis. He lives with his father and has never seen his mother. His parents got separated after his birth. On Paul's 13th birthday, his father (Chris Messina) decides to take him to a carnival because Paul never gets out of his house. His father made him take off his ski mask, but it didn't work as planned. Paul hates himself, he even keeps the mirror covered so that he doesn't have to see his hairy face. This beginning part is realistic and painful where a father is trying to teach his son that he has to fight against the odds and accept himself the way he is.

In the second half, Paul leaves the house in search of his mother (Chloe Sevigny). During this journey, he meets Aristiana (Sophie Giannamore) and Rose (Eve Hewson). This road trip looks like the usual teenage movie which loots stores and also drinking and partying. I would say that the story got deviated from its main purpose here. I don't want to reveal further details, but I would say that Aristiana is also a special character. The personalities of Paul and Aristiana are completely different. I don't know what the purpose behind connecting them is. Maybe they both are special kids.

It would have been better if the scriptwriter had given more depth to Paul's character than the road trip stuff. Anyway, it is a good coming-of-age movie, a good presentation of the problems of two distinct characters. Jaeden Martell has done a wonderful job. 'The True Adventures of Wolfboy' is an enjoyable family movie overall.
