The King of Staten Island (2020): The Dark Humour

The King of Staten Island movie is related to Pete Davidson's real life. Yes, Pete's father was a firefighter in the New York City Fire Department, he died in the 9/11 attack while responding to the incident. This is the story of young Pete Davidson before he got in the limelight. It's about how his perspective changed towards the firefighter. The story is also focused on Pete's drug addiction and getting his life together.

The King Of Staten Island Movie Aesthetic Poster

The King of Staten Island is a story of 24-year-old Scott (Pete Davidson), who hasn't figured out what he wants to do in his life. Scott lives with his single mother and young sister. His sister is moving away for college. Scott has 'ADD' (Attention Deficit Disorder). He is not optimistic about his life, he is kind of lost. Scott is an art school dropout. He loves smoking weed and tattooing people. He isn't a professional tattoo artist yet but is working to be one. Scott has a weird dream about opening a tattoo restaurant where people can see his tattoo art while they have their meals.

Scott's father was a firefighter. He died responding to a fire incident when Scott was just seven years old. So the movie is also focused on moving from his past trauma that he hasn't been recovered from since childhood. His father was closest to Scott. For Scott, he was the coolest guy on the earth. Since that incident, Scott hasn't been the same person anymore, something has broken inside him. He is kind of angry about the firefighting thing because they risk their lives without thinking about the people who are waiting for them at home. Although I think it is part of their job.

After 17 years, Scott's mother (Maris Tomei) starts to date Ray (Bill Burr), coincidentally, he is a firefighter too. Scott doesn't like this relationship because he doesn't want to repeat the past. In the end, things turned out well. Ray is a good guy. He helps Scott to change his perspective about the firefighter and also helps him to move on from his past trauma.

If you like dark humour, then you must watch this movie. Pete Davidson's character is so relatable and realistic. The script is well-written as well as effectively executed. Pate Davidson fits really well in Scott's character. He is made for this type of movie. The wholesome emotions and expressions he puts in the movie are really hilarious and heart-wrenching at the same time. I liked the soundtrack of the movie. The King of Staten Island is a wholesome package of unique punchlines, hilarious characters, lost youth, and family drama.
