The High Note (2020) Movie Review

'The High Note' isn't that high. When I watched the trailer, I didn't have high expectations from the movie. After watching the movie, here we go, my thoughts about 'The High Note'.

The High Note (2020)
Genres: Drama, Music
Cast: Tracee Ellis Ross, Dakota Johnson, Ice Cube

The High Note Movie Aesthetic Poster

Tracee Ellis Ross is a daughter of a famous singer and record producer, Diana Ross. So, obviously, she has always wanted to play the role of a singer. Tracee is well-known for playing hilarious roles. Her role as a singer is experimental. In my opinion, she doesn't fit in as a singer. Yet she played her role well. Dakota Johnson also has a family background in music. Yes, her father, Don Johnson, is an American actor, singer, producer, and songwriter. Ice Cube is one of the old-school rappers. He doesn't influence The High Note much except a few moments in the movie.

In 'The High Note', Tracee Ellis Ross is playing the role of an aging singer, Grace Davis. Maggie (Dakota Johnson) is a personal assistant of Grace Davis. Maggie's father is a radio jockey, so Maggie has obviously grown up surrounded by the music world, and Grace Davis is her idol. Ice Cube is Grace's manager.

The story of The High Note is focused on whether Grace Davis plays safe by sticking to her released hit album or takes a risk of releasing a new album. Jack (Ice Cube) and her music label care about money, not her art and music. They don't want to release a new album. Since Jack has been with her throughout the struggle and helped her to reach this spot. Even though she's working on her new album. She respects Jack's proposal and decides to play safe. Here, Maggie doesn't want this to happen. Maggie is Grace's friend besides being a personal assistant. She is secretly working on being a producer, but she is way too busy at her job.

The High Note is also labelled as a romance movie! The romance of Maggie and David (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). Maggie meets David at a grocery store, and he sings a song there. David is really talented but insecure about his talent. He invites her to his party, where she introduces herself as a producer and tells him to produce an album with her. She doesn't tell him about Grace Davis. Later they worked together on the album. There's this tiny suspense you will find out after watching the movie.

The story of The High Note isn't fascinating. I find the story ordinary and dull. At some point, the romance of Maggie and David is kind of shallow and boring. You will find this type of storyline in any five random movies you pick up, except the music stuff. The music is only a good thing about this movie. Also, I read somewhere that people were saying it would have been better if Dakota Johnson's role was played by an actress of colour like Zoe Kravitz.

So what do you think about 'The High Note'?
